The New Face of America and Where Our Children Fit in it.

We Americans are both mesmerized and trapped with understanding our own identity. We are shuttered by a historic narrow inclination towards nativism which is today led by the likes of Donald Trump. At the same time the outside world has ALWAYS  imposed itself on us in the form if immigration. As such our dalliance and dance has been long term and unavoidable. Consequently the new face of America is becoming clearer as revealed in this article by National Geographic. I think in a round about way it also reveals a prescription for what it will take to be successful for our children in the new globalized world. My thoughts for success for our youngsters are as follows. Those riding the apex of tomorrow will need the following qualities:

1) fluency in new technology ( and math if possible).

2) the ability to be able to navigate another culture(s) outside of our own with equal comfort of being able to identify as an American and as another (this may not sit well with those that firmly cling to the notion of American exceptionalism).

3) understanding of another language (s) with fluency. Spanish is a must for our children. If possible another language or two as well will be helpful.

The world of tomorrow more than anything will be one where East meets West. The rapid shift of capital from the west to Asia will also need to be addressed in this whole context.
